What Is a CLAUDE.md File and Why It Matters More Than You Think

What CLAUDE.md actually is

A CLAUDE.md is a markdown file that sits in your project root. When Claude Code starts a session, it reads this file first — before you type anything. It's the instruction layer between you and the AI.

Think of it as a permanent briefing document. Instead of telling Claude "use TypeScript, follow our naming conventions, don't add unnecessary comments" at the start of every session, you write it once in CLAUDE.md and it applies automatically.

Other platforms have equivalents:

  • Cursor: .cursorrules
  • Windsurf: .windsurfrules
  • ChatGPT: Custom instructions or system prompts
  • Gemini: GEMINI.md

Same concept, different file names. They all serve the same purpose: defining how the AI should work before you start working with it.

Why the instruction layer determines output quality

Here's something most people miss: the quality of AI output is largely determined by the quality of the instructions it receives, not the model itself.

Two developers using the same model get wildly different results. The difference isn't intelligence — it's the instruction layer.

A good CLAUDE.md tells the AI:

  • What coding patterns to follow

  • How to handle edge cases
  • What quality bar to hit
